Vertical Garden was our one-day design, three-day installation for the Startup Portugal bea.to off-summit event. We proposed a structure that would function both as a room divider and as a container for a makeshift garden in the entrance space of an art exhibition.

The wire mesh fence panels are arranged in the centre of the room and define a rectangular volume which contains a false periscope: two stacked windows open to either side of the space measuring the difference in height given by the mezzanine. The niches do not communicate and instead generate a disruption that upsets what would be an exacting symmetry.

The contrast between the strict geometry of the white mesh and the natural shapes of the plants facilitates the reading and understanding of the structure’s complexity. Growing gradually less dense towards the ceiling, the garden brightens the room while better defining the volume.
