Thorsø Notations
Danish Arts Foundation, Skitsekonkurrence om lyskunst til Torsø
Restricted competition: 2nd prize
KWY.studio (Ricardo Gomes with Frank Bauer, Luise Marter, Rui Neto and Mara Nuyens), Visualisations: Jens Gehrcken
Thorsø Notations is an investigation of ephemeral forces and their trace interactions within larger, physical systems. It studies the dynamics of light, wind, and gravity and how the confluence of these elements form an ongoing moment of shifting interpolation and recognition. The borders between technology and nature, art, and environment itself become a palimpsest for permeability.
We thought it would be important to locate the artwork so that it would become a part of the residents’ routine as well as be visible to Thorsø visitors: the Kærlighedsstien is a quiet, almost-hidden park which connects two parts of the town and serves as a passage in-between. However, its trees are visible from various locations from around and within Thorsø. Our proposal will add to the already enigmatic nature of this area while reinforcing its function as an orientation device for locals and visitors.
The placement of 36 slender poles in a gentle curve along the Kærlighedsstien creates an abstract gesture within the natural environment. The spirited presence of the work is achieved not with massive material effort but by pointing at the obvious, the quiet force of a bent environment, both shaped by the arched opening between the wooded areas as well as by the horizontal force of the wind moving across the landscape.
Thorsø Notations has a presence in both day and nighttime, from close and afar: during the day the poles’ silent movement mirrors that of the grass or reeds, gently projecting its animated shadows in resonance with the trees. This view is accentuated further in proximity when walking the along the path. At night, the work manifests in its sparest form, a mimesis of the fuller world in a dark surround: swaying in concert with the wind patterns, each white light on top of the poles fracture the surface plane of the night sky with their individual curves and arcs. This choreography of light can be seen from further afield as an intriguing wind calendar.
Each light is programmable and allows for an overlay of additional sequences spanning the array of poles. The natural horizon of the area is juxtaposed with an artificial horizon formed by waving lights on top of the poles. This double horizon introduces a perpetually changing polyphonic counterpoint upon and into the landscape. It is shaped by the interplay between the bending rods’ patterns, the programmed lights on top of the rods, the natural light, and the changes in the environment throughout Thorsø’s seasons.
